A Liberal Swallows the Right-Wing BS
To the Editor:Don't you just hate it when a mealy-mouthed, spineless liberal starts believing the right-wing hype about himself? What the hell does "Christopher Beem" mean when he implies that liberals don't use the words truth, right and good? Liberals (I'm not a liberal, I'm more progressive than that, but here I'll defend them) use these words all the time to describe why Bush's policies are morally wrong -- and why economic justice, racial non-discrimination, and a non-imperialistic foreign policy are the only acceptable principles.
Re ''A House Divided, and Strong'' (column, April 5):
David Brooks is right. The left has suffered gravely from its knee-jerk embrace of post-modernism, multiculturalism and relativism.
Until we progressives are able to use words like truth, right and good without scare quotes, we can expect to continue to struggle politically.
The last great progressive movement in America, the civil rights era, bespeaks the power of the alternative.
Democrats would do well to spend more time talking about what we believe and why than about framing and positioning. It is a much more difficult but nevertheless more immediate task.
